Chapter 1: On Dry Land in Alabama

Even though this novel follows the two main characters (Shawn and Keith) and their relationship on a cruise from Galveston to Mexico and other southern ports, the first chapter starts well before the main characters even make it to the cruise ship. In fact, Shawn has not even left his house yet; and Keith has not yet arrived. The chapter plays a vital role though in introducing Shawn and giving readers a chance to get to know the character - where he lives, where he's from, what's he like.

Almost the same can be said for Keith who is a main character, but secondary to Shawn. Keith is not introduced until page seventeen (17) when Shawn picks him up at the airport. Being a novel, Shawn and Keith could have lived anywhere - in the same town, across the street from each other, in the same house or at least within driving distance; but having Keith fly in from out of state gave the story line a more appealing look at how these two guys were facing tremendous obstacles in their relationship from the very start - the lived almost on the opposite side of the country from each other. One is in Alabama, and the other is in Utah!

From the first page through page fifty (50), various supporting characters drift in and out of the scenes. There is Dustin, Shawn's brother, who is on his way out west on a ski trip. Bob and Clarisse who cook dinner for Dustin and Shawn before Keith arrives. Rachel, an old high school friend of Keith's, is there for dinner one night; and Shawn's friend, Doug, is there as a sounding board for Shawn.

Several scenes are also mixed into this chapter. A lot of activity occurs at Shawn's house with the dinner party and Dustin's arrival. The airport is a short pick-up segment. The Christmas gift swap is also at Shawn's house and is followed by lunch at Street Cafe with Shawn and Doug while Rachel and Keith have lunch - both parties rehashing what happened at the house when Shawn and Keith exchanged Christmas gifts.

There are plenty more details that I can dive into, but I think I will add these later. I'll let readers add their comments and see which way they would prefer I take this critique of the first chapter.
